Don
Thompson is Powell River's most famous Jazz musician; a virtuoso on bass,
piano, vibes and percussion. He played here in the
1950s at high school; he dug George Pryde's drumming (world-class drummer with
PR Pipe Band) and played jazz with John MacKenzie, a great piper in the PR
Pipe Band who also played Bass. A painting of Don hangs in the Clansman
practice room. Don's wife Norma ran a Ladies Bagpipe band in Vancouver; Don wrote the
suite "Journey to Skye". He's mentioned in
Wikipedia!
"In recent years there has been a great deal of emphasis placed
on new forms, especially the suite. A good example of a suite for pipe band is
Don Thompson's composition Journey to Skye (1987)." His Jazz Bio is here. A demo of Journey to sky might work at this link. (7th tune down, click Listen). Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Clansman Pipe Band adds "Journey to Skye" to its repertoire! Some music links are below. | |||
