Ian Richmond
Ian was born in Shropshire, England of a Glaswegian father and an English
mother. When he was nine, his family immigrated to Canada and settled in London,
Ontario, where he began learning the pipes just after his fourteenth birthday.
Ian first learned piping from P/M Duncan Gibson in London, then furthered his
piping education with the renowned piper, George Duncan, then living in Detroit,
Michigan.
Ian has enjoyed success as a solo competitor and has played with several bands
over the years, including the grade 1 MacNish Distillery Pipe Band under P/M
Gord Tuck. He has been pipe major of the City of London Police Pipes and Drums
and of the grade 4 competition band, Clan Douglas, that was adopted by MacNish
Distillery as a feeder band because of the high quality of its pipe section.
Ian comes to Powell River after taking early retirement from a long career as a
university administrator and professor of French studies that took him out of
the pipe band circuit for a number of years, although he continued piping. He is
now an active member of the Clansman Pipe Band and is instructing a number of
aspiring band members. As will happen to pipers, Ian responded to a call to
attend a protest rally, and ended up on the front page of the local paper as
"one of those who led the rally"!...
Ian was elected P/M of the Clansman Pipe Band in September 2007
