Dave Florence

 

  Dave with a school dixie band in 1957Dave was raised in Powell River, began clarinet in the Brooks School band in 1954, and has played clarinet and saxes in school, community and jazz bands for fifty years.

While in Ottawa as the Director of Computer Systems Engineering for the Forces, Dave enjoyed chances to play with professionals from the CF bandsAs Commandant of the School of Communications-Electronics for three years, what a thrill it was to present 1200 students on parade, marching to the Vimy Band!

 


During his 32 years as a communications-electronics officer in the air force, he spent six years in the training system, and enjoyed pipe bands and military brass-reed bands on the frequent ceremonial occasions.

Dave plays with "Our Kind of Music", playing  jazz standards, dixieland, and dance music

 

On his retirement back to Powell River in 1993, Dave joined other musicians playing jazz and dance music locally. You could check out the Our Kind of Music Website here.

Dave with chanter in 2005, playing along with .BWW files on the computer After a year of lessons with George Thomson, Dave joined the band in May 2006. He served as President of the Clansman Pipe Band Society from September 2006 for two years, and now serves as assistant treasurer and webmaster.
